In 2014, Valve released their first gaming console in the Steam Machine. Designed by Valve and built by Alienware, the Alienware Alpha R1 was a direct response to Microsoft locking down Windows… threatening to require Microsoft Approval to run, and requiring all apps and purchases run through the Microsoft Store.
So Valve made their own OS, and their own hardware, in an attempt to take on Microsoft’s monopoly. And while it wasn’t successful at the time, it set the tone for what Valve would release 8 years later with the Steam Deck, and set Linux on a path to genuinely compete with Windows when it comes to gaming.
